About the 1981 Fiat X1/9
The Fiat X1/9 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-seater sports car designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone. The 1981 model is part of the 1500 Series (1978–1982), which received the larger 1498cc SOHC inline-four engine producing 85 horsepower — a welcome upgrade over the earlier 1300. The 1500 also introduced the five-speed gearbox, larger brakes, and the distinctive dual-slot front bumper. In Australia, the 1500 Series was sold through Fiat dealers and became the most popular version of the X1/9. Many examples survive today thanks to Australia’s dry climate, and they remain eligible for historic vehicle registration in most states. The 1500’s improved drivability and parts availability make it a favourite among owners and restorers.
