The Story

I’ve owned this Fiat X1/9 for about five years, and what started as a tidy little project quickly turned into a full restoration. Some of you may have followed the Green Machine series on YouTube and seen the journey along the way. The body was in great condition when I bought it, but almost everything else needed attention. As I worked through one area after another, each job uncovered something else that needed doing. Before long, the car was completely stripped down and rebuilt from the ground up. Over the years it’s been a labour of love, with countless hours spent restoring, upgrading and improving every part of the car to bring it back better than ever.

About the 1978 Fiat X1/9

The Fiat X1/9 is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-seater sports car designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone. The 1978 model is part of the original 1300 Series (1972–1978), powered by a transversely-mounted 1290cc SOHC inline-four producing 75 horsepower. With its removable targa roof panel that stores in the front boot and independent suspension all round, the X1/9 offered genuine sports car handling at an accessible price. Australian-delivered 1300 Series cars were officially imported by Fiat Australia in the late 1970s. These early models are identifiable by their single-slot front bumper design and smaller rear light clusters. Today they are eligible for historic vehicle registration in most Australian states, making them a popular choice for enthusiasts who want to enjoy their classic on the road.
